Lagar – Portuguese word that designates an open vat, shallow and quadrangular in shape, were traditionally the fermentation and maceration take place.
Lagar it’s a blog about a Portuguese red wine, my red wine, and will show how that wine is born and raised, from the vine to the bottle!
This red wine speaks about me, my vines and my region. I make use of the traditional techniques and refuse the use of any enzymes or selected yeast. By doing so this wine has profile which can only be achieved in here. It’s not better than the other wines but it’s without doubt different.
My vines are in my father’s vineyard which is only 0.4 ha and was re-planted in 2004. It has white and red varieties. The red varieties are Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Cabernet Sauvignon. I only take care of the Portuguese varieties, which sum 400 vines.
I had my first real harvest last year but I’ve been experimenting and learning since 2002. I’m not an oenologist or a professional grape grower so every year that goes by takes me one step forward.
I’m also an Environmental Engineer and cycling lover.

saludos desde caracas, i’ll keep visiting your blog

Hello Milton,
Good job!
I just didn’t understand when you say that “I only take care of the Portuguese varieties”, but then you have Cabernet Sauvignon in you wine…
Am I missing something?
Anyway, when is the wine going to be available?
Best,
Luiz

Hello Luiz
My wine is only made with Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz. The Cabernet Sauvigno is vinified by my father. We have different aproaches on wine making.
Thank you for the comment!

Milton,
This is a good start and I did enjoy reading it. I’m wondering if, in future entries, could you put some more details – make it more personal? What is the weather like in your vineyards. Are the vines having a good day or a bad day? What do you feel when you’re working in the vineyard and working in the winery making wine?
You mentioned that you are not an enologist by trade and that each year is a learning experience for you. How about sharing some of your trials and tribulations with us? What obstacles have you overcome? Also, how does your Environmental Engineering degree help you in the vineyards and the winery?
Anyway, those are just some thoughts. Feel free to pick and choose from these as they work for you. Overall, I did enjoy reading this and I’m looking forward to learning more about Portuguese wines because I love to drink them.

Your land looks gorgeous on googlemaps!
