Before I start posting about my wine and vineyard, I’ll contextualize by posting about Portugal and the wine region were I live, the Bairrada.
Portugal, founded in 1143, located in southwestern Europe is the westernmost country of continental Europe. Together with Spain compose the Iberian Peninsula.
The climate is classified as Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters.
The Bairrada wine region, located in central Portugal, was delimited in 1887. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and by mountains on the east. Because it is located near the ocean it has a milder climate, with an average temperature of 15ºC and about 2500 hours of sun per year.
There are about 7000 ha of vineyards which are mainly composed of small properties. The landscape is flat with chalky clay and sandy soils. My vineyard is in a small village called Bustos (between Oporto and Coimbra) and has a sandy soil with very good drainage.
Bairrada produces essentially red wines and sparkling wines. In my case, for the moment, I’m only producing non-sparkling reds.
